Healthcare Professional
In 2008, I went off to Bournemouth University to study a Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice. Since then, I have become a registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with the Health Professions Council (HPC) UK. This means that I spend most of my time in theatre working with the anaesthetist and surgeons, or in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (Recovery!). I would also spend time working in maternity, A&E, X-Ray and could also be found on the emergency team for the hospital.
I am a member of the College of ODP’s, of which I am on the committee to allow ODP’s to administer drugs under Patient Group Directives (PGD’s).
I am currently back at university, fulfilling my other dream, training as a Paramedic. This goes hand in hand with the ODP role as many skills are transferable and I get to work outside.
St John Ambulance
I first joined St John Ambulance at the age of eleven as a Cadet I undertook many training & leadership courses and progressed through the cadet ranks before transferring to the adult unit. I took on responsibility for running the communication side of the unit, which includes the radios and website as well as being a part of the ‘training team’ which involved planning and giving talks at training evenings. In 2011, I qualified as an emergency transport attendant allowing me to crew an ambulance for emergency work at events and for 999 calls.
I am also a trained youth leader through St John Ambulance, having completed a training package to allow me to assist with the running of a cadet unit. This involves the administration, training and being a mentor for the cadets we take on duty.
In 2012, I accepted the role of a County Staff Officer for Clinical Operations and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
Technology
Since I was little, technology has interested me. I wasn’t really bought up with computers, until I was about 10/11. It was then I realized how the power of computers is truly immense and started building and modifying computers.
Then there was the 56k dial up. I used the Internet to check E-Mails and to do the occasional homework assignment. It wasn’t until I was 13/14 when broadband was introduced to me. It was around this time that I realized the true reality of the World Wide Web. I have since used the Internet in a different way, developing websites and online applications.
TomDimmock.co.uk
In about 2005, I ran a website called Dimmock-Online. I used this as a sort of development playground hosted on the server of a friend. I began to run applications such as Wordpress to create an online Identity for myself. It was then I decided to push this further and create TomDimmock.co.uk to originally share the stories of my life (Yes, I know!…amateurish Blogger!). Since then, however began using TomDimmock.co.uk as another development playground leaving the Blog in the deepest darkest corners of the web.
