Notebook or Laptop

I have been asked this question severall times, and it has been really bugging me that very few people know the difference between a Laptop and Notebook.

If you were to ask a teenager of todays culture, the answer is usually “Nothing, they are the same thing” This is what was drilled into me. Think of it as the Tomato Tomato Potato Potato (where the second of each word is in an american accent)

Then, if you were to ask an old Computer Science or IT teacher, the answer you would be given is “The size and power. Laptops are portable desktop computers, and notebooks are ultra portable laptops used for work only due to lack of power”

So…who is right???

The dictionary definition of a notebook is;

A light, portable computer that is generally thinner than a laptop.

So far, we are now thinking that the IT teacher is right, however…in modern days, there is just no difference. Technology is smaller. Small enough to make handheld computers more powerful than desktops i know!

The term “Notebook” is becoming new term for laptop in current society, and there is absolutey no difference anymore!

Scottish Ambulance Service: Cock Up

The Crest for the Scottish Ambulance ServiceScottish Ambulance Service is currently being criticised for losing a disk containing highly sensitive data.

The disk, containing all the details from over 1 million 999 calls (which is ever call since February 2006) was being delivered by a TNT Courier, and went missing after leaving the Paisley EDC.

The disk included the following:

  • The Callers Name
  • Casualties Name
  • Casulties Date of Birth
  • Location of Incident
  • Phone Number used to call
  • Names of crew dealing with call (Call taker, dispatcher, duty officer, ambulance crews, stations etc.)

You know…the sort of stuff which a identity fraud would LOVE to find, especially for use with health insurance scams.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said that all the data was encrypted and was password protected, so that all 999 details would be near on impossible to expose.

Messenger:mac 7

Microsofts Messenger for Mac version 7On the 24th April, Messenger:mac 7 Was released by Microsoft. Unfortunately, due to Microsofts dissapointing version 6 which did not support webcams, I moved to using Mercury Messenger.

Mercury is more of an IRC IM, and is therefore slightly different. Anywho, I went to download Mesenger:mac 7 today, only to find Microsoft had not yet included it. It was very disapointing to see Microsoft can’t keep up with Technology. It has now, however, been included for the Corporate users, but considering I am a personal user I suppose I will go back to Mercury.

Microsoft…Please work alongside us Apple users, unless you want us to move onto apple software!

Apple iPhone 3G

The brand new 3rd Generation iPhone released by AppleIt was about 2 weeks ago when Steve Jobs, and the Apple Crew released the Apple iPhone 3G.

Luckily, I have had a chance to play on one of these already, and am almost 100% impressed. The new software itself is very good, with not only the ability to play higher quality games, but also more day-to-day functions like the new ability to search through the contacts, which the iPhone 1st generation did not include.

The main new feature of the new iPhone is the GPS. It seemed fairly accurate to use, however did reduce the battery life a fair bit quicker than I was expecting.

The phone is using faster technology, and Internet pages are noticeably quicker due to the 3G features. Apparently, the official Apple Inc. pages are the slowest to load!!! However due to it being software powered, the phone can be updated easily.

Like a Mac, the iPhone uses Apples Mail program to look after your Email accounts, meaning that you can work away on your Emails whilst out and about. However unlike a blackberry, the iPhone is able to work with GMail’s HTML features and not strip them out. And with the touch screen, scrolling your finger across the screen is much easier than a scroll bar like my HP IPAQ.

A few things I don’t like

  • The Camera needs to have a zoom and auto-focus. And 2MP is nothing with today’s technology
  • Apple are not using the metallic look like their iPods, but the back is made of moulded plastic, which does not have the same “executive” feel to it.
  • The Price…I am a student!

I could have written more, but don’t like to bore! All I can say is I WANT ONE. So if you are feeling kind, all cheques payable to Tom Dimmock.

A bit off topic…

Right, I have had input into what I should use my blog for, so once the new design kicks in you will see!

But more importantly, I passed my driving test yesterday! Am so happy about it!

Take Care…

Hello

Well…not too bad. There may have been 5 and a hlf months since my last post, but who cares! Well, some people obviously do as I have had loads of EMails from the *quiet ones* asking where I had gone.

Since my last post, I have become 18 (6th Feb!). Which means I can now buy alcohol, gamble, buy knives, go drinking. All sorts of things that I have never been able to do before!

I applied for universities to study the Paramedic Science Foundation Degree. As most people know, this has been mmy life long ambition, however I didn’t get a place to study in ‘08 mainly due to lack of driving license! I have therefore applied to study as an Operating Department Practitioner. I have an unconditional offer from Bournemouth as long as I pass the CRB (Yes…I know that makes it a conditional offer, but it was sent to me as unconditional). My placements for this will be at Taunton (long way from uni!) so I am awaiting to see if I can get the Royal Dorchester!.

I will apply to do the Paramedic Course straight after this! so those hoping to study in ‘10 or ‘11…WATCH OUT!

I had my last exam last friday (Friday 13th!!!). It was in Design and Techology. Therefore I am hoping to get my full A-Levels in Design Technology, Computing and Media Studies (or media theories as it apears to be!). I am relieved that they are all over, so lets just see how things pan out in my life.

I am still working at Tesco! Yes…still a trolley boy, but I love it out there. Have got work there this evening, but looking out the window at the weather not sure if I want to be there! I am also waiting to hear back from St Richards Hospital regarding HCA work. Healthcare Assistants being the one who does all the menial tasks such as bed baths, feeding, stocking up, talking and basic (and I mean basic!) treatment. Not to mention drinking cups of tea!

I am, of course, still with Vikki. It is coming up 14 months! It didn’t seem like yesterday that we were celbrating our years anniversiairy!

Right…I am hoping to start doing something with my site. I am in the progress of a new design, and I therefore need to know from people what they want to see from me!

And I promise, I will blog as soon as I can, like I promised in the post called 2008
