Scottish Ambulance Service: Cock Up

The Crest for the Scottish Ambulance ServiceScottish Ambulance Service is currently being criticised for losing a disk containing highly sensitive data.

The disk, containing all the details from over 1 million 999 calls (which is ever call since February 2006) was being delivered by a TNT Courier, and went missing after leaving the Paisley EDC.

The disk included the following:

  • The Callers Name
  • Casualties Name
  • Casulties Date of Birth
  • Location of Incident
  • Phone Number used to call
  • Names of crew dealing with call (Call taker, dispatcher, duty officer, ambulance crews, stations etc.)

You know…the sort of stuff which a identity fraud would LOVE to find, especially for use with health insurance scams.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said that all the data was encrypted and was password protected, so that all 999 details would be near on impossible to expose.

NHS Chichester

Well, most of us signed a petition to save the NHS A&E in Chichester.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Prevent the threatened closure of the A&E department at St. Richards Hospital, Chichester. This A&E facility is the only one serving this area to the North and South of the Downs in the Chichester area. Closure would mean that cases would have to go to either Queen Alexandra Hospital Cosham (already overloaded and some 40 minutes away) or Brighton the same distance away. Money has been spent on modernising the facility and this will be wasted. Downgrading the status of this hospital will also remove a valuable NHS training facility at all levels.

Well, a response by Downing Street and the rest of the Government has been formed. I have copied it below.

Although the Department of Health provides strategic leadership to the NHS and social care organisations in England, it is for local NHS organisations to plan, develop and improve services for local people. These bodies are therefore best placed to respond to patients’ concerns and needs. However, the Government has made it clear to the NHS that any changes to the configuration of local services should not compromise patient care and should show how the quality of care will continue to improve further in the future. Local services must continue to meet patient safety requirements and the standards set in National Service Frameworks and should demonstrate how they will use improvements in medical technology and techniques in future.

The Government is halfway through a ten-year plan to provide a modern NHS, responsive to patient needs and focusing equally on promotion of health and well-being, as well as the treatment of ill health. So far, the NHS has been leading the change, focusing on increasing capacity with more staff and more facilities. As a result, hospital waiting lists are now the lowest since records began, early deaths from cancer and coronary heart disease continue to fall and patients have more choice and involvement in their own care. The White Paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say: a new direction for community services focuses on a strategic shift that locates more services in local communities and closer to people’s homes. Similarly, the Department of Health’s clinical reports, such as Mending Hearts and Brains and Emergency Access - Clinical Case for Change outline the opportunities to change acute hospital care in order to deliver the best possible services in future. These proposals build on the improvements that have already been made to health and social care and will reinforce the Government’s existing programme of reform.

Plans for the future configuration of acute services provided across the southeast have not been determined at a national level. Any proposals for change that may be put forward by local NHS organisations will be subject to extensive consultation with local people. This discussion phase will inform the proposals, and any significant service changes proposed will be subject to the full public consultation which is expected to take place in the autumn. The decision for the future service pattern will then rest with the Primary Care Trust (PCT), which will analyse the responses and decide which course of action to take.

Should formal public consultation be required, the PCT’s final decision will be subject to scrutiny from the local authority overview and scrutiny committee (OSC), which is made up of elected local councillors. If the OSC determines that the consultation has been inadequate or that the proposal itself is flawed, it can refer the decision to the Secretary of State.

Well. In my opinion, it shows that the decision has been made and set in stone. Then again, I think it has been like this since day one! Why bother shutting down a major A and E department, which has been and still is in the black.

I don’t think the PCT care about another 17,500 deaths each year (estimated figure from campaigners).

Well, I will leave it up to you to comment your ideas on this, or visit http://www.supportstrichards.co.uk

On Saturday, I got to meet the real David Dickinson. He was filming for “Dickinsons Real Deal” in Chichester, and we provided medical cover for the programme. There is so much behind scenes on these programmes that I have never noticed befor whilst watching them on TV. Look, even had my picture taken with him!

Apoligies for me not posting recently, but I now have an amazing girlfriend, and she is my priority! Her name is Vikki, and we have known each other for a very long time. I think that we were made to be together! [[love you hunni]]

Don’t Phone and Drive

A police officer was caught earlier today after using a mobile phone whilst driving, after the new laws were introduced.

The Police Chief Superintendent, Kenny Scott, was stopped by officers from his own force (Strathclyde), as he drove along the M74, off duty in his private car. In line with these new laws, he was fined £60 and will recieve 3 points on his license.

Kenny Scott joined the Strathcylde Police force in 1977. He has fulfilled a wide variety of duties, has has served throughout the Glasgow and Lanarkshire divisions. He recieved a degree of Law in 1991, and went on to become the head of Strathcyled’s Police Legal Services between 1995 and 1997. He has worked his way through the ranks from Sargeant and Sub-Divisional Officer at London Road Police Office He then worked towards the Deputy Divisional Commander for Glasgow South and East Renfrewshire Division and then became the Divisional Commander for Glasgow East Division.

Roger Vincent (RoSPA) mentioned that drivers are four times more likely to crash while using a mobile phone,

“It is disappointing that somebody in his position has broken this law”

“He would have been well aware of how dangerous it is to use a mobile phone whilst driving”

“As well as putting his own life at risk he also jeopardised the lives of other road users”

Why…?!?!

Just been reading another of the blogs in my RSS Feed, and have stumbled across this post.

Many of you are aware of the horrific assault on a Police officer around a couple of years ago, that left PC Daniel Coffill in a coma. A year later, PC Coffill was still critically ill, with cell structures unable to re-grow and requiring 24hr care.

However more recently, it was decided that the sentence for Jack Turner and Lance Samuels is to be reduced. This will mean they will be walking the streets in less than five years, unlike PC Coffill who has little chance of ever recovering.

Why would anyone ever reduce the sentence of someone who, not only injures, but practically leaves someone who does so much for the community dead.

Shrove Tuesday (Pancakes!!)

Havn’t had my pancakes yet…maybe i’ll have them tomorow.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period that Christians call Lent, the time of preperation for Easter. Lent is a time of giving things up, and indulge yourself with the foods you cannot eat during Lent. We eat pancakes, because they contain Fat, Butter and Eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

Shrove Tuesday will always be 47 days before Easter Sunday, therefore the date is going to change each year. Whereas this year it falls on the 20th Feb, in 2008 it will be the 5th Feb. I set you the challenge of working out the next year it will occure on the 6th Feb…My Birthday!

Saddam Hussein…

Right, as many of you know, Saddam Hussein was hanged on Saturday 30th December 2006…

Earlier today, I was told that you didn’t have to search hard to find videos of the execution, which shows the full hanging. AlthoughI believed who told me, I could not believe that anyone would put images like this on the internet, available for all to see.

So, what do other people think of this hanging. In my eyes, it makes us no better than him. He went around killing people, and what have we just done. We have murdered him, making him a martyr for those who supported his regime.

Anyway, not feeling too well today, So I am going to leave this a short post.

Note: When I say “We”, I am using it as a hypothetical term for the government…I did not support this event in any way, shape or form.

Hamster

Look, I’m back….you must really be privaliged!

I forgot to mention earlier, but for those fans of BBC’s Top Gear….Richard Hammond (Hamster), appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last night. It was his first TV interview since his high speed, near-fatal crash during filming for a Top Gear stunt earlier this year.
